Welcome to our new book review site. We love to read and we do a weekly book review podcast as well. Today, I will be reviewing Jocko Willink’s new book, Discipline Equals Freedom. If you are not familiar with Jocko, you can read a ton about him here. Jocko is a retired Navy SEAL and a master motivator. He has a weekly podcast as well that you can listen to here.
I first learned about Jocko from his first book, Extreme Ownership. Extreme Ownership is a great book about leadership. Written from the perspective of soldiers, it takes you through a war story, the lesson and it’s practical application in today’s business environment. I would highly recommend it. Our team read this together as a book club entry and it teaches everyone about personal responsibility and leadership.
Discipline Equals Freedom is Jocko’s life and values in theory and in practice. Jocko gives real world advice and recommendations on diet, training, martial arts and of course leadership. The book provides a structure for developing self discipline in your life. There are no excuses, there is no planning for later. There is now, so get up and do it. I love this no nonsense approach to life. It sounds so simple in theory and it is, but a struggle for most of us. Jocko has a way of simplifying it so much you feel like you have literally no excuse.
The book is a quick read and I would highly recommend purchasing a hard copy so that you can dog ear and highlight. It is a field manual so you will want to frequently refer back on exercise or meal planning. My absolute favorite part of the book is the full version text of Jocko’s famous “Good” speech. I listen to that clip almost every day. Quick book and quick blog. Go read this and come back and tell me what you thought. I think you will love it and come back super motivated for life.
Happy Reading, JP!
